Welcome to Wonderfully Vegetarian - a down-to-earth cooking experience based on my kitchen exploits.

Nothing will benefit human health and increase chances for survival of life on Earth as much as the evolution to a vegetarian diet. -- Albert Einstein

You must have heard "Kalyana Samayal satham" song at some point. Well, may be not quite there, but I certainly hope the posts in this blog enrich your cooking experience and lets you approach cooking with a SMILE, rather than as a chore or a rules to follow regimen. Anything Vegetarian goes, ONLY criterion: The end product MUST taste good - to those you are serving.

சேப்பங்கிழங்கு சிப்ஸ்!!!! Vow! Arum(mayyana) chips!

Arum(mayyana) Chips :-)

Once you taste it you'll love it. Yes, taro root makes very tasty chips.
Looking back, I cannot forget the incident of almost .. buying taro root. Now you might wonder what is almost buying.
I was new to this country at that time and on a student budget! So we were on our weekly "Grocery" expedition, armed with all the clipped coupons from the newspapers. We went to the nearby grocery store "Publix" and as soon as I saw this vegetable I picked some 8-10 of them, already imagining the end product.

We were at the check out and my items were scanned and it was Taro root's turn and it was weighed. The sales person looked at a chart and entered $6.00! Me and my friend looked at each other dumb founded! Oh! my God! was written all over our faces! I couldn't imagine downing that small portion of my favourite vegetable for $6.00, when the total budget for my grocery shopping that week is $25. So I regretfully returned the vegetable back to the store, and I can never forget how close I was to buying it.

Well anyways, choose uniform shaped taro roots. Peel off the skin and cut into very thin uniform shaped slices.

Take a sauce pan with oil and drop the slices and fry.
When done, add salt and chilli powder to taste.

Will beat "our potato chips" hands down anyday.

You can also cut it into uniform shaped wedges and deep fry and follow the same procedure.

Can be a snack, side dish or with some imaginative salsa and dip can be an appetizer too!
